Lime (Calx, Calcium Hydroxide)
LIME WITHOUT MINES
Lime is often referred to as 'calx', 'calcium hydroxide', hydrated lime, or slaked lime. It provides the alkaline environment needed in many dye recipes and other craft and agricultural activities.
Lime is an essential ingredient in indigo fermentation vats, for example. It
raises the ph level. A high pH level is necessary to dissolve and reduce the indigo so that it can merge with the cloth. Lime has many uses, including as an additive in scouring baths for fiber and cloth pre-dye prep and even as a calcium-rich soil ammendment.
